Our Story

Passion for Learning was founded in 2011 with the intention of recruiting adults from all walks of life who could bring their experiences, enthusiasm and skills to children struggling to read and learn. Many children simply do not have the benefit of the enriching experiences that make learning fun. Limited opportunities and little knowledge of the wonders of the world in which they live mean that too many young people lack ambition and aspiration. Understanding individual children’s motivations and the barriers that they have to overcome to learn and achieve is the starting point for the work that we do. Within the community at large there are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of men and women who have the time and the inclination to enrich these children’s lives and open their eyes and doors to a brighter future. They help to introduce children to books that they want to read as well as games and activities that enable them to learn as they play.
In 2011 we started with just one school, six volunteers and 18 children. Our first volunteer meeting was held around one table. Just six years later we have over 130 volunteers working with over 400 children and our meetings have outgrown some of Chester’s larger venues.

Diane has been working with children in many different capacities for over 40 years. She has a psychology degree from University of Liverpool. She has run a Playcentre for 5-16 year olds in Halton, been a primary school teacher, a lecturer in Health and Social Care; is a mother and very active grandmother. Diane set up Passion for Learning from the boot of her car 8 years ago and the organisation has grown steadily over this timeframe.

The children that we work with have complex needs so the work that we do is bespoke and designed to identify and break down every barrier that we encounter. Our individual volunteer support aims to help the children to overcome social and emotional challenges to learning and literacy. Our Enrichment Clubs give the children experiences that they would otherwise never have, connecting them to their communities and the richness of a world that many of them never see. Our large events open the door to the future inviting local employers to find different and exciting ways to raise expectations and show the children what they might do one day. Our outings enrich their lives with simple pleasures like their first trip to a beach and thrilling experiences like a night at a musical. We introduce the children to new situations and give them the confidence that they need to succeed.
